Did you know: Forget the Kentucky Derby and Hollywood glam! In Benson, Mules take center stage for four glorious days during the legendary Benson Mule Days. This isn’t your average festival. It’s a heartfelt tribute to the hardworking mules that have served the community for generations. Over 70 years strong, Benson Mule Days attracts nearly 30,000 people with rodeos, mule competitions, dazzling arts and crafts, mouthwatering food vendors, lively dances, thrilling carnival rides and a parade.
Rest Stop 1: Jordan Dam Visitors Center. Took in the views and learned more about Jordan Dam and Jordan Lake which together conserve 46,768 acres in the midst of the expanding Triangle thanks to a partnership between the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the State of North Carolina. Rangers were onsite to tell us more about the history of the project and the abundance of wildlife in the area including Bald Eagles! Cant believe it was eight years ago that I did Ironman Raleigh in Lake Jordan.
Rest Stop 2: Northwest Harnett Fire Department. To bad they could not route us to a rest stop at the Angus Barn ;-)
Rest Stop 3: Angier Depot. Grabbed a bite to eat and enjoyed some live music.
Saddle sores …. Took the van back from rest stop 3. Got 45 miles in.
Camp Site: Food Trucks (see a theme here) - Man With a Pan, Big B’s Southern Kitchen, Belly Busting BBQ and Pancakki Express. Plus we had live music from Bruce Naegelen, a favorite performer of the Johnston County locals that plays classic 70s rock. Oh and guess who returned - The Fat Tire Beer Garden!
